January Check-In from the Studio
What winter looks like at the studio right now.

January, as it actually is
January always changes the rhythm, whether we plan for it or not. The holidays end, Minnesota winter does its thing, and everything slows down just enough to notice it.
At the studio, that doesn’t mean less work — it means different work. January is when I focus on refining how sessions run, planning ahead for the year, and working at a pace that supports calm, intentional photography instead of constant rush.
Winter sessions and why they work
Winter photography doesn’t get much hype, but it’s one of the most steady times of year. The light is softer, schedules are simpler, and sessions feel calmer because families aren’t stretched thin.
Newborn sessions especially benefit from this pace. Parents aren’t trying to squeeze photos into an already packed calendar, and babies tend to settle more easily when the energy in the room is slower and quieter. The result is work that feels connected rather than hurried.
What’s happening at the studio right now
Right now, the studio is focused on newborn photography, along with family and maternity sessions that fit into this winter rhythm. January is also when a lot of behind-the-scenes work happens — updating workflows, refining studio setups, and planning for the year ahead so sessions later on don’t feel chaotic.
If you’re a returning client who’s been thinking about updating photos this year, this is a good time to reach out. Winter sessions tend to be more flexible on the calendar, and they’re a great option if fall always feels too crowded.
Looking ahead to upcoming sessions
Over the next couple of months, I’ll be opening spring family sessions and continuing motherhood-focused work, including maternity and early connection sessions. I also start planning fall sessions earlier than most people expect, simply because I want those to feel intentional rather than rushed.
Details will be shared when booking opens — no constant reminders, just thoughtful planning so families have time to decide what works for them.
A quick note on my teaching work
Some of you may not know that alongside studio work, I also teach photography and mentor emerging photographers. That educational work continues this winter, both in classrooms and through one-on-one instruction.
Teaching keeps me sharp. It forces me to slow down, explain why things work, and stay grounded in the fundamentals — which directly benefits the families I photograph. The studio and the classroom inform each other more than people realize.
From my family to yours
January at home is quieter too. Fewer obligations, more time with family, editing sessions with coffee nearby, and long walks with the dogs when the weather allows. After many years of doing this work, I’ve learned that protecting this season is what makes the rest of the year sustainable — for me and for the families I work with.
If you’d like to connect
If you’re expecting a baby, thinking about family photos this year, or just want to talk through timing and options, you’re always welcome to reach out — even if you’re still in the planning stage.
Let’s also stay connected on Instagram for daily doses of inspiration, latest updates, and glimpses into the wonderful stories we encounter together
Thank you for being here and for trusting me with your memories.
